The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM), organized by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, is one of the most prestigious international mathematical modeling competitions and the most influential of its kind worldwide. The contest covers a wide range of topics, including economics, management, environment, resources, ecology, medicine, and security. Teams of up to three undergraduate students are given four days to address a designated problem, involving tasks such as building a model, optimizing data, validating results, and writing a paper to submit their final entry. The competition is a rigorous test of the participants' ability to research and solve problems in a short time frame, as well as their teamwork skills.
The competition features six problem types:
Problem A: "Resource Availability and Gender Ratio Issues"
Problem B: "Submersible Positioning Problem"
Problem C: "Momentum in Tennis"
Problem D: "Water Issues in the Great Lakes"
Problem E: "Sustainability in Property Insurance"
Problem F: "Reducing Illegal Wildlife Trade"
After thorough preparation and training, the participating students carefully considered various complex real-world factors to develop and validate reasonable models. Their work not only provided solutions with practical significance but also laid a solid foundation for solving real-world problems in their future studies and research.
Shenzhen MSU-BIT University has consistently placed great emphasis on the organization and training for mathematical modeling competitions. During the winter break, Professor Zhang Ye and Lecturer Chen Yang from the Department of Computational Mathematics and Control conducted a one-week training program for students, focusing on commonly used models in the MCM, analyzing problems from previous years to broaden the students' knowledge. In the 2024 MCM, five students from the Economics Department achieved the outstanding result of Second Prize.
